Strontium titanate
In addition to its reactivity, strontium possesses unique properties that make it a versatile element with various practical applications. Strontium decomposes rapidly in water to produce strontium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. When exposed to air, strontium undergoes combustion, forming both strontium oxide and strontium nitride. However, the reaction with nitrogen occurs only at temperatures exceeding 380°C, resulting in the spontaneous formation of strontium oxide at room temperature. To prevent oxidation, strontium must be stored under kerosene, as freshly exposed strontium metal rapidly develops a yellowish hue due to oxide formation. Moreover, finely powdered strontium metal poses a fire hazard, as it can ignite spontaneously in air, highlighting its extreme reactivity.
The distinctive crimson colour imparted by volatile strontium salts to flames makes it invaluable in pyrotechnics and flare production. This characteristic flame colouration is exploited in various applications, ranging from fireworks displays to emergency signalling, where the vibrant hue serves as a visual indicator.
Natural strontium comprises a mixture of four stable isotopes, adding to its versatility and potential for various scientific and industrial applications. Despite its challenges in handling due to reactivity, strontium's unique properties make it a valuable element in a wide array of fields, from materials science to entertainment.
